kites is a film that will appeal to the hrithik fanatics and will also be a hit with the rest. the film is definitely a commercial and mass entertainer, albeit, not a great one. it is a good, safe, commercial entertainer. the director has tried to mix two different genres and tried to combine a suspense thriller with a romance-tinged film. it is a good attempt, but not really a good one.

kites tells the story of hrithik roshan, who’s a police inspector and a single man who’s in love with a girl, natasha. hrithik’s character – chakradhari – is a police officer in a district of mumbai and the film is based in south india. in the district of southern india, called thirunelveli, there’s a district called kannapuram. chakradhari and natasha want to get married. but the way things are going, will they get married or not?

although kites is a good attempt to mix a different genre, it is neither a gripping movie nor a thriller. the suspense gets over in the last half hour as the story takes a predictable route. the way the film ends, may make the audience believe that the two lovers have survived. but then again, we all know that there’s always a surprise in life. the release of kites will have a definite impact on the box office collection of 2014.

the million dollar question is, does kites fly high let me hit the nail on the head: the film has some terrific moments and of course, hrithik roshan’s star power to cast a spell, but it has plenty of low moments. in fact, kites could’ve been a cult film, but its writing relies too heavily on clichs and formulaic stuff and that, frankly, throws a spanner.
