The second expansion, Fall of the Samurai, focuses on the Boshin War of the latter half of the 19th century between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Imperial Court, with the latter wanting to reassert its control over Japan. In a turn of events unthinkable in the basic game, the Shogunal elite allied with Western forces to resist the Japanese Imperial forces and instead try and annex areas they have been losing to such as the Okinawan islands. The result is a conflict… where both sides are desperate and lose much of their soldiers. This results in added strategy and logistics complexity since troops must be kept alive and morale must be kept high, along with the right political situation. After so many political issues (in the late 19th century, Japan was torn apart by revolutions, coups d’etat and wars), the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate would result in sweeping changes for Japan – but also massive changes in the way the game is played. The faction now starts with the Imperial Clans allied with the British, instead of the Shogunate, and also makes the introduction of the extremely powerful First Imperial Bashi cavalry, which is one of the most useful units (while historically inaccurate) in the game, being one of the few units capable of dealing with the larger units of the Imperial forces.
Two expansion packs were produced, introducing new campaigns to the game. The first, Rise of the Samurai, is set during the Genpei War of the late 12th century, which led to the decline of the Chinese-influenced Imperial Court, the rise of the first shogunate and the dominance of the Samurai class in Japanese society. Unlike the basic game, the major clans are split among three families and the igniting event of the conflict will occur (Emperor Takakura is pressured to abdicate by the Taira and his toddler grandson Antoku is placed on the throne), setting off war between the three families and probably their aligned minor clans with them – the pressures of this war will create an emphasis on the usage of agents to aid your cause without even more fighting. The religion mechanic has been adapted to influence of the three major families which will be a core mechanic to deal with constantly, since Junsatsushi agents can convert provinces with a majority of influence aligned to your family without a fight – especially helpful with the war certainly occupying your troops elsewhere.
the samurai are a class of elite warrior who have been above the common class of warriors for over 700 years. they are of the highest standing in the world of feudal japan and are the direct heirs to the mighty minamoto clan. the minamoto clan eventually split into three distinct branches, each of which made a powerful army of their own. like their ancestors, the samurai have been raised with the way of the sword, school of the sword and the way of the sword specialties. they have their own unique unique units, the ashigaru, samurai and the heavy cavalry unit the tercos.
while the shogunate was a powerful force in the late edo period, the imperial court was also increasing its power with the arrival of new technologies. the shogunate saw the need to be a force of its own and a new force was needed to support its aspirations and keep it in check. this new force was the boshin war, the last battle of the feudal period. the boshin war was essentially the war between the old imperial court and the new shogunate that overthrew it in favour of a unified japan, but the fact that the imperial court was ultimately defeated was a great victory for the shogunate.
the shogunate starts out with the power of two of the three minamoto clans combined. this does give them the edge in troops, but the shogunate lacks the organisation and power of the minamoto. the nambu clan is a relatively new clan with a focus on the tradition of the sea. they can only recruit genji and yuan at a slower rate than the minamoto, but have access to the superior korean shipyards.
the shogunate builds up their army slowly, relying on the minamoto to provide the core of their army and the nambu to provide the elite troops. the samurai and ashigaru are given access to the way of the sword speciality to improve their fighting ability, but the shogunate itself has no focus.
