windows xp sp2: one of the features of winrar is its ability to create self-extracting archives. these self-extracting archives (also known as portable executables or exe) are executable files which you can run without installing them. winrar lets you create self-extracting archives of any rar or zip archive.
if you find that winrar does not work properly, check if your windows components are up-to-date. for example, the windows update utility may automatically update and install important windows updates, or you can manually download and install these updates.
in addition, there are a few other technical aspects to consider. for example, you can use winrar to back up a portable usb flash drive or other portable storage media, making sure to include the proper back-up software and any important program data. you can also use it to back up your main system drive, if your computer is connected to the internet.
in other words, why wasn’t the later released norton v22.7.0.76 product with 2k-4k+ security vulnerabilities patched shipped to customers, instead of sticking to older xp-compatibility winrar products?
personally, i feel that the op anon743 may have been using a patched winrar v5.x instead of the later released v6.02, and the winrar update may have inadvertently caused the unrar.dll to be overwritten with the newer 6.11.0.0 version, as the same version of unrar.dll is used in both winrar v6.02 and v5.x products, and winrar’s xp compatibility issue is not purely coincidental.
note: i have not been able to test the op’s updater packages on other systems (eg. w7). however, i do not believe the winrar’s xp compatibility issue appears purely coincidental. also, the op anon743 mentioned in their original post that they are using nis v21.7.0.11 (released mar 2015) described in product update – 21.7 of norton antivirus, norton internet security & norton 360 because they can’t trust/use lu anymore as the process would force-upgrade the program to 22.x.x which causes problems on the xp system. version 21.11 is the last version released for the norton v21.x product line and was found to have multiple critical security vulnerabilities disclosed in the june 2016 symantec security advisory sym16-010, and all norton v21.11 and earlier users (including those with win xp / vista oss and a pentium 4 or newer cpu that supports sse2 ) were encouraged to upgrade to a patched norton v22.76 product asap back in june 2016. also, i have assumed that the op is still using the same version of nis (v21.11) as they have been using since they started using winrar in february 2002 on their win xp system.
right now i can only determine that the unrar.dll is faulty as it is, per the update logs, not symantec-signed and thus the entire iu operation terminates. however, it is also highly possible that this new version of unrar.dll (6.11, previously 4.10) has compatibility issues with xp (as winrar product support for xp ends after version 6.02), and if this is the case, then symantec must take steps and revert to a previous winrar product (eg. 5.91 or earlier) when prepping and packing the virus definitions files for web download.
for example, winrar 5.30 (the first version before 6.02) works on xp. when unpacked (using winrar’s own exe file) and the contents of the archive are inspected, there is nothing special in the files that would indicate that it is not compatible with xp. it is only when the file is extracted that the compatibility issue with xp is realized. for those that do not know, winrar’s own exe file does not have the compatibility issues with xp. if winrar’s exe file is the same exe file that is used to produce the various updater packages, that would indicate that the problem is in the updater package itself. this would mean that the whole updater package is faulty, and not a faulty version of the exe file itself. on the rapid release virus definitions page, they have not listed any problem with the winrar exe file that causes the compatibility problem with xp, but have only listed problems with the winrar workflow.
yes, they are. but, there is a much easier solution to the problem. it is to go back to using the winrar workflow that was used prior to v6.02. that is to say the winrar workflow that has been used for the past several years. that is the only solution to the problem, because the new winrar workflow introduces new compatibility issues with xp, and v5.10 (the last stable release) is the only previous winrar workflow that is compatible with xp.
