If the Communist party or a Pakistani separatist outfit decided to do a Bollywood-style movie, they would almost certainly use English. Even for Hindi viewers, the best treatment of politics is in English, and, in most cases, the Hindi is just filler along with the ads. With a couple of exceptions, Hindi films rarely even open themselves up to the culture and society out of which they sprung. There are no studio visits to Bengal or Punjab or the banlieues. Why would there be? Its all above board, and the stars are, more or less, honest.

In contrast, Indian reality, from the urban slums to the villages, rarely show its face onscreen. The result is that Hindi cinema is as American as Hollywood, albeit with perhaps a little less joie de vivre. Post-independence, it was a fashionable thing to be Indian, and movies spoke loudly of the bustling country, with its colonialist past, its international aspirations, its unhappy divisions. The tax on cinema imposed in the reformist 1980s has only made the studios more content with their English-language status quo. But the independence of speech in Hindi cinema remains vital, and Hindi movies have had the good sense to keep it that way.

Aatish Taseer, born in 1986, is among a new generation of Hindi filmmakers eager to tap the riches of the speech India has saved. His first feature, The Lunchbox, a triptych of stories, follows a famous Mumbai food journalist named Mira Bhatia and her friend Kiran, a film buff who has devoted her life to understanding Hindi cinema. For all of Mira s passion, Kiran is the only one who can understand her, and her blossoming romance with Aatish mirrors that of Mira and her father, a frustrated writer. There was a lot of room to roam in Taseers lush, dramatic debut, shot in Bombay. The conversations are the stars of the movie, and the spoken Hindi is more complicated than the overall movie probably needs to be. But it is a leap forward, from the English-heavy weightless debut of Aatish s father, Chehre (2011), and a deliberate decision to treat his Hindi as the only spoken language. The Bollywood audience needs to hear Taseers ideas, and his decision to open up the dialogue is, if only partially, vindicated.

Nariman Juloo is also doing this in English, but for Mumbai s more discerning audiences. Its an expensive venture, but whether it is successful or not will depend on the quality of the English and the resources invested in it. Its all very well producing a film in English and making it available in the language of the colonizers as a way of staying true to their culture, but if a film isnt satisfyingly crafted, well, the whole thing might well be an exercise in futility. Padukone is a Bollywood star, after all, and deserves to be given the best shot at expressing herself through her work. The Walk should be just that, and if that means that it has to be dubbed into English, then so be it.
Its high time someone translated Indian literature into English. It would be a huge boon for the cottage industry of translations and interpretations, if the masses could access the work of writers like Nabaneeta Dev Sen, Vijay Tendulkar, Kiran Nagarkar, Shivaji Sawant, Lekha Pargai, RK Narayan and Kiran Desai. More films in English would help the cause. Yet translating English films into Hindi cinema is not easy. Indian audiences are used to subtitles on these movies, so Indian producers would not want to cut their profits by going back to the language of the colonizers. A bilingual version, in other words, is not just impractical, its also impractical for legal reasons.
In all probability, it is precisely because of the legal hurdles associated with converting existing movies into English that India is a net importer of English films. It is also because of the difficulty in translating English into Hindi that American Hollywood is way ahead of anyone else.
