when pierre dervaux looked through the ring-binder collection of sheet music he had amassed over the years, he was surprised to find a note about the piece he was playing. this was by dvořák. dervaux was half czech and half french, and had grown up with music and musicians from europe across the continent and in the uk. following the end of wwii, a group of musicians – who went on to form the association vocalise – became a regular at his l’eglise de pleyel in paris, where he himself had played, his father having been a church musician. dervaux loved the musicians who came and played at his school in versailles and he took to his piano, as a surrogate instrument.
in 1962, dervaux joined the association vocalise, whose guitarist, jean ledrut, had held a key part in the creation of the piece. ledrut had grown up in his native brittany and of celtic heritage. he had been one of three members of the association vocalise, together with rené daumonier, who was originally a jazz pianist, and georges knip, a powerful bass-baritone. ledrut plays guitar on two of the six pieces in this concert, and also on the b flat minor version of the cancion de oda. the latter song was arranged by ledrut, with vocal mime, and features two female voices, like a messiaen-like soprano and a soprano altissimo. pleyel had released a recording of the piece in 1927. the association vocalise recorded it again in 1964 and ledrut also arranged his own version for pianist jean-pierre rampal..
