As a young man, he dreamed of becoming a teacher or a musician and studied to become a mathematics teacher at Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas, before he transferred to the Carnegie Institute of Technology to study physics.

In 1930, he transferred to the California Institute of Technology, where he graduated as a chemical engineer. He decided to go into science because, as he later wrote, “I discovered Pluto in 1930 and had a natural desire to further study the planets.”

In 1931, he took a job with the Percival Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Lowell, the man who discovered the planet Neptune, hired Tombaugh to help him with the comet and asteroid surveys that would help Lowell classify celestial objects. To his surprise, he soon discovered that something was missing in the constellation of Orion: a planet.

In February 1930, Lowell had published a popular book, Pluto or Planet X, in which he argued that a planet had been found in the right place. If it orbited the sun, he claimed, it would appear as a large disc or ring around the sun. Pluto fits that description, which was why it was named after the god of death and rebirth in Roman mythology.

But most astronomers, including Lowell, doubted Pluto was a planet. More accurate surveys and observations were needed to confirm its existence. In November 1930, Lowell returned to his study of the comet field and located the object now known as Comet Lowell. A few days later, he made a drawing of the object, which had a 10th magnitude. In honor of the drawing, which made a comet look like a planet, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided that Pluto should be called a planet. Tombaugh was part of the team that confirmed its existence in February 1930.
