A pleasant change of pace is that unlike previous Smurfs movies, where characters frequently pee on things and take a long time to find the bathroom, this one has characters urinating on things and bathroom lines speeded up. There’s still slapstick and comic-relief animation throughout, and one game show sequence — if you count the characters’ antics on the couch as a game show. Plus, there’s a bizarrely pleasing nod to 1980s pop culture, with references to classic Pee-Wee Herman and the “three stooges” (including the revelation that the word “Smurfs” comes from a variant of the word “stooge”).
But for all its lively animation, the movie does have a few serious themes that are appropriate for a slightly younger audience: friendship and teamwork. The Smurfs are always together, and they are willing to risk their lives for each other, especially when they learn that some of their own people are being mistreated by Gargamel. The roles are roughly reversed in that the Smurfs usually start out as the underdogs and over time become a confident and invincible team.
The subplot involving the magical keys and the Fountain of Youth was interesting, but the movie was a bit too slow in getting there and it wasn’t the focus of the film. And, alas, The Smurfs do not return to the forest village that Gargamel stole.
Many will have fond childhood memories of the original cartoons. But despite all the improvements (and they are a lot, thanks to the movie’s filmmakers), the new Smurfs are still cute and well animated. And even fans of the original cartoons will probably enjoy the cast (and new voices) of characters like Brainy and Clumsy. But while it was fine for my four-year-old to watch, I couldn’t help but think that the lack of dialogue would be an issue for older kids. As noted above, the adult humor is largely in the visual realm (though the occasional Smurf joke does pop up).
In this third all-new movie, the Smurfs try to save their village from disaster. When the evil Gargamel hears a mysterious riddle — he needs a certain crown, namely a green one — he sets his plan into motion. First, he captures the Smurfs and sends them on a madcap adventure through the Forbidden Forest. Then, Gargamel himself captures Clumsy, and Smurfette must rescue her from the evil wizard’s clutches.
Smurfs Bubble Story allows players to unlock different aspects of the Smurfs and also gives them a chance to unlock even more types of the Smurfs in two different ways. There are two ways to accomplish the goal. The first is by buying all the different Smurf levels, each containing a different type of Smurf. Then you can win even more Smurfs by matching items, completing challenges, or accomplishing specific goals. The second way is by collecting coins and using them to buy even more Smurfs. So one way is a means to earn coins, while the other is a means to buy even more Smurfs. Both methods allow you to unlock new aspects of the Smurfs, but in two different ways. All of the different ways to earn coins and buy Smurfs are very easy to accomplish and allow you to unlock a few different ways to work your way through the story. Overall, the game is an entertaining one to play, whether you enjoy the Smurfs movies or not. The artwork is very colorful and the animations are smooth, but the characters are rather unrealistic and unrealistic animations are never very funny.
Overall, The Lost Village is a very entertaining movie that managed to grab a decent amount of hits at the box office. It managed to gross over $197 million and was mostly received with positive reviews from both fans and critics. The movie was hilarious from start to finish, and the Smurfs are made for kids, just like those that watch the movies.
