many, many video game scare films rely on jump scares – the moment when you’re seconds from death. think silent hill in the town square, or game over in the hotel room. and while the jump scares in silent hill and eerie are pretty inventive, not all video game scares are so intense. but just because something is light and fluffy, it doesn’t mean it’s not terrifying. shrooming is a clever new game that’s perfect for halloween, and does something not many games do – it sticks in your mind. and shrooming also got a more fair representation in this list, having been covered in 2008. whatever the scare, it’s impossible to forget that knife that pokes out of the toilet, or those headphones that try to strangle you. for every horror-movie cliche that’s been adapted into a video game, you’ll find the shrooms game that will genuinely make you jump.
the power drill massacre is a game. this is not a game that can be argued against, but will, inevitably, give pause to the casual gamer who considers it a rogue-like action-adventure game. especially in the early hours of the game. the foundation of the game is an inventory management system, and managing this inventory becomes a staple of the game. with that said, much of the game is purely walking around on a map and opening doors. then you’ll occasionally switch to a new area or encounter new enemies, but it quickly becomes repetitious.
the opening hour or so of the game is, frankly, a slow zone for anyone who has ever played the genre before. the corridors make for the slowest slasher movie in existence and the enemies are tough. the enemies feel like the worst type of enemy, that of sneaking enemies that relentlessly chase you and are just far too annoying, practically wrecking your time if you don’t get into a good killing spree. the enemies might be better as they have a tendency to drop their weapons and even run away if you engage them directly, which is a frustratingly common occurrence in the genre. the attacks themselves seem like they’re from an old assassin’s creed game. they consist of painfully slow, heavy attacks, with the enemy lunging at you in one direction, then you turn around and move the direction the enemy lunged before and start battling the enemy as if he or she was an axe user.
