This guidebook uses the CS2 release of Photoshop, and although the tutorial information is still relevant for the most recent release, you’ll find differences on the Internet that you may want to check out.
A Quick Word on Layer and Mask Basics
Layer editing in Photoshop is an essential part of image work, and understanding how layers and masks work is essential for the Photoshop user. Photoshop offers layers as a means of organizing your image editing, but when it comes to printing, transparency is the way to go. You don’t really need to worry about how the layers work in Photoshop; in the next section, I explain how they work. Here I explain what they are and how they’re used.
So what is a layer? A layer is a grouping of individual elements that you can use to create different effects on the same image. The layers are used to create different effects on the same image. For example, you may create a title over a photo, or you can create an object over a photo. The elements of the elements used in the title or object simply get moved into the title or object layer and any editing that’s done to those elements is applied to the object or title.
You can create multiple layers (either placed on top of each other or layered), stack them, and apply effects to them. Each layer has a transparency setting, which enables you to adjust the transparency of the layer. In other words, if a layer is opaque, its contents are covered with whatever is on the image; if the layer is fully transparent, its contents are shown through the background and any objects that are on the image.
Layers and masks are the basis of the layer-based editing system that enables you to add and manipulate layers and make them visible in your document. You have two ways to add a new layer to your work:
From the Layers panel: This method is very fast, and it requires a little bit of artistic talent, but it’s good to know. With a quick stroke of the Layers panel (see Figure 6-1), you can add a layer for any type of work you do in Photoshop.

Testing if a column in a table contains certain values
I’m creating a trigger that should catch those records in a table that has a specific value in a particular column.
I have 3 columns in a table, the id, the name and a flag in the name column.
I need to run a query that will return only those records where “Test” exists in the name column. If nothing is found there, I need to return all of them as usual.
So far I have this:
SELECT a.id, a.name, (a.name!= ”) as ‘Test’
FROM some_table a
WHERE a.name LIKE ‘Test’
Is there a better way to do this?

You can just use IN:
SELECT a.id, a.name, (a.name LIKE ‘Test’) as ‘Test’
FROM some_table a
WHERE a.name IN (‘Test’, ‘Whatever’, ‘Other’)
Using LIKE with strings other than ” means you can use wildcards in the strings.
You might want to use EXISTS if you want to avoid testing the empty string cases:
SELECT a.id, a.name, (EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM some_table c WHERE c.name = ‘Test’)) as ‘Test’
FROM some_table a
WHERE EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM some_table c WHERE c.name = ‘Test’)
The EXISTS() syntax is available only since SQL Server 2012. If you’re using an earlier version, you can use a correlated subquery:
SELECT a.id, a.name, 1 AS ‘Test’
FROM some_table a
WHERE a.name = ‘Test’ OR EXISTS (
SELECT 1 FROM some_table c WHERE c.name = ‘Test’
)
or:
SELECT a.id, a.name, (
SELECT 1

Since you’re mentioning the other values, I assume you want to find all rows where the name is not ‘Test’. You can use a NOT EXISTS:
