Getting to Know Adobe Camera Raw (ACR)
Photoshop CS6 includes a state-of-the-art program called Adobe Camera Raw that enables users to control a large number of adjustments in camera. This provides great value for users looking to improve the look of their images. ACR is a free plug-in for Photoshop CS6.
When you open an image in Photoshop, you open it in Photoshop’s default editing program, Photoshop CS6. However, the image opens in ACR so that you can use the controls to open images from many different formats, and then enhance, straighten, and sharpen the image.
To open an image in ACR, follow these steps:
1. Choose Edit Develop Convert to Adobe Camera Raw.
2. Click the Advanced button (circled in Figure 10-18).
3. Click the Open button.
4. Browse to the image you want to open in ACR. Select the file, and then click Open.

You can share files with other users on the Adobe Labs servers and then open them through ACR. To do so, select Save to Adobe Labs and then open the image. The software opens the file and enables you to play with the parameters. If you save the image in the Adobe Labs server, you can access the file from any computer. If you don’t want to have a certain image accessible to other users, you can click the small eye symbol near the lower right of the file’s thumbnail in the File Manager.
When you close the image in Photoshop, the image file moves back to where you opened it from — on your hard drive.

How does Photoshop work?

Software brings to life your ideas by recording them as a series of instructions. This is known as a bitmap. Every color and shade of brightness in a bitmap is represented by a number.
