The information gathered from the Netop Vision Pro queries is sent to a remote command and control (C&C) server in the same LAN segment. No connection to a remote C&C server is required, so it can be hard to find, even if the attackers makes a mistake. A well-placed system administrator should be able to wipe the whole installation if this is the case.
However, a user does not have to be an administrator in order to see the query data traffic: even when using an old version of Network Monitor plugin in the browser, one can look into the network traffic and find the queries to Netop Vision Pro. The first time is not enough to be familiar with the software; after the queries, the C&C server can be then seen during every subsequent session.
The easiest way to do this is to use a tool such as “WinRM Quick Fix” (found here), an application that disables Network Monitor for some period of time and changes the installed (default) Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to something else, like OpenJDK, a free and open source implementation of Java. Netop Vision Pro does not seem to support the new JRE.
Netop Vision Pro has a number of restrictions that would make it difficult to use in a corporate setting. One can say that the application is not built to be used by a regular user, for example, there is no way to add or remove search results, and the software does not show a list of all the PCs running it on a network. The last is particularly troublesome because all the PCs running Netop Vision Pro are potentially adding innocent users to the security risk.
On the positive side, Netop Vision Pro is easy to remove and uninstall, and it has a fairly short footprint. Data is stored in the registry and it is not hard to locate. Nevertheless, deleting any data from the Netop Vision Pro is a bit harder than deleting other items from the Registry. Weighing up the ease of removal against the risk is something a senior sysadmin should do before taking any action.
the third mitigation involves the use of a different user account. mcafee labs was able to elevate privilege using a different user account, even if the software was not run in system mode. an end user would need to enable the following registry value:
elevating privileges to system is a bad practice, and this attack can be used to circumvent any protections in place to prevent this. no mitigation or patch will prevent this attack from being performed on the server, and the end user cannot be trusted to avoid running the software in system mode.
mcafee labs has come across this attack in the wild, and has developed mitigation strategies that can be used to avoid this attack. the team has been in communication with netop, and is encouraging the company to address the issues, and providing recommendations as to how the software can be updated to mitigate this problem.
the software’s functionality has also been expanded with the addition of the ability to remotely control the user’s webcam, plus new features that can be used to lock or prevent students from logging out of a school session.
in addition to this, the software is still vulnerable to cve-2020-1470, cve-2020-1464 and cve-2020-1642 which could allow an attacker to compromise the software and upload malware or steal sensitive information.
there are no known exploits to the standalone version of vision or vision pro. the company recommends that teachers should monitor their networks to ensure that the software isn’t installed on any networks where it shouldn’t be.
according to the company, there is no workaround to prevent the exploitation of the vulnerabilities. if you don’t have the full patch, you should contact your network administrators to ensure that the software isn’t being installed on your network.
