The most efficient way to use Lens FX is to use the “Preset” type.
By using preset mode, you choose between the three most common types of “distortion” and the basic pixel sub-sampling that can be applied.
The suggested presets are the following:
The easiest and most effective one for most portrait pictures will be the “Rectilinear (None)” option.
This preset will apply no distortion to the image (but may cause some noise).
The “Rectilinear (Nearest Neighbour)” option is good for landscapes and general “artistic” photos.
It may take a little while to get used to the in-your-face appearance of the distortion,
but it is worth it in the long run for an overall “classier” result.
The third preset is “Arima”, and it is well suited for general artistic purposes.
It gives a more pleasing result than the Rectilinear preset, but it is not as easy to use as Rectilinear.
Both of these presets include the new X-Trans II technology
The X-Trans II engine makes the camera much more robust,
and it also helps to eliminate the stuttering problem
that many users have reported.
The X-Trans engine may not be ideal for everyone.
If you are shooting on high ISOs or you want a lot of control over the
amount of distortion, you may prefer to use the “Pixel Sub-Sampling” option,
which may be better suited to such applications.
This option is not strictly “distortion” anymore,
since it is simply the way in which the lens is “sampling” the image sensor.
