Nope, in 1996, within about a month of, say, Mulholland Drive (maybe even in the first act, or in Act Two) a movie could have ended with both Diane and Rita breaking into a mall atrium on vacation, with our final scene being a very bloody fight between them with which we all know that they will outsmart and outmaneuver each other and have fun finally getting into the rest of the movies perfect ending. Just like Mulholland Drive, but also without having to make sequels to it ever. Same general idea, different case. Or like Transformers, in which the Autobots and the Decepticons all come to blows during the final battle scenes. It could have just been an awesome action movie, not a complex, sprawling movie about human experience and identity and the nature of evil and how much of it is within human beings.
And a movie with a GREAT prison escape could never be a GOOD movie simply because of the prison escape itself. Unless, of course, the prison escape is actually another character or other part of the story. In that case, its no problem. But thats a long way down the road to have a long story including a prison escape (and dont start with Logan Lesters Run like I did. Jail rape is not a powerful theme in the art of cinema. And prison is not prison. And prison is always prison. Every prison is the same.)
For example, in the movies of the period in which I was born, we had action heroes who didnt have to use all that much cleverness, because they were, like, super-duper indestructible, and they knew, like, human and animal psychology and all that stuff, and they were just irrepressibly good at everything. And we had indestructible heroes who werent super-human, but they were just irrepressibly good at everything. So for example, Robert Redford is super-duper good at being good at being irrepressibly good at being good at escaping prisons by crawling through things, or driving trucks, or getting on trucks, or by an armed confrontation or even by getting punched in the face or otherwise deliberately provoking some body armor or a squad of on-the-tip-of-their-toes trigger-happy rookies to shoot at him. In Le shank, the two characters are complete opposites – Hector DeJean is the indestructible one, and Terry Clark is the irrepressibly good one – so they play one another almost like a comedy double act, and its delightful. Even better: The movie doesnt just end with the two of them escaping together, it ends with Hector bringing Terry home to his mom and giving him a bath. One of those scenes that just makes me think Good Grief, you havent seen LES MISERABLES, because its just about the best movie that gave birth to a genre, which is probably why we didnt see it for decades, and why the occasional university or art house movie about prison escapes just kind of seems dorky and weird.
