the course seeks to give students a comprehensive overview of the basic principles and analytical approaches of international law in the context of war and peace. in particular, the course offers an in-depth examination of the law of war and human rights law, as well as the legal framework of peacekeeping, including the un charter and the rome statute of the international criminal court. while the course is principally concerned with conflict law, it also explores the wider issues and practical problems of the international legal system. we also attempt to explain the legal framework of peace and to trace the development of peace-building practice in the context of post-conflict situations. special emphasis is put on contemporary challenges faced by the international community such as terrorism, cyber-warfare, conflict resolution and the prevention of genocide. we also examine the legal and ethical issues that arise from the use of military force.
the course provides an in-depth examination of selected cases and case-based legal analysis. we examine the most pressing questions in the development of a common legal order, with special emphasis on the role and responsibilities of the international community. we examine and analyse the different roles played by the security council, the general assembly and the court of justice. the course is designed to provide a solid legal foundation for law students and practitioners, as well as researchers. in order to provide a useful overview of the law of international relations, we also examine the main principles governing the conduct of states in international affairs, including humanitarian and human rights law. the legal, political and ethical dimensions of these issues are also examined.
