robw i think you just showed why why music is far different than movies and tv shows, and yes, that’s the exact reason why i think the riaa is trying to block it. they’re probably doing the same exact thing on the small scale, with the labels. they do not fear the future of movies, because there is still a huge audience that they would’ve lost otherwise. they don’t fear the internet, because they know that it isn’t going to take away any industry, they are basically embracing it, so much so that they are trying to make sure that the internet doesn’t overtake the industry by making sure that they are the ones bringing the content to their audience.
tyler i do know that people pirate all day, every day. it’s become the norm. why put yourself through the anguish of spending your own money on a product that you don’t want? they can’t really say that the artist is any worse off, because there’s plenty of people willing to pay for music just to support their favorite artist. i buy all the riaa’s music. even on itunes.
if all you heard was the right/libertarian side of me, i apologize, and am glad to hear that you find me coming off a little crazy. with the left/socialist side of me, i dont mean to sound totally crazy. when it comes to this, i need to hear both sides. sure, the riaa is correct, and so are the music execs and publishers. pirates are bad. the government has no business targeting them, and governments who are this friendly with artists/entrepreneurs are dangerous because they can and have allowed their favored class to get away with things. the truth is, its ugly, and the truth isnt black and white, and there are many shades of gray in between. there are good pirates, bad pirates, and just plain confused pirates. there are good executives, bad executives, and just plain confused executives. i want everyone to be honest, and i dont want a government that is going to try to act like a knight in shining armor. i just want a country that will listen to both sides, that will hear both sides, and that will try to act in the best interests of the majority, instead of acting for the short-sighted actions of a few. thats what my core political philosophy is. the key being majority. my heroes and ideals are more idealistic than most, because my own personal progress has been limited by the fact that i have never been the majority. i want a country like that too, and i think that thats the reality of most societies. we all want to be on the right side, but since we cant be, we need to act in the most effective way we can. are you listening?

i disagree. it’s the consumers choice. if i want to listen to ‘wonderful life’ and i download it legally, fine. but if i want to listen to it for free, and all i’m using is my ‘phone, great. but don’t go around telling me that i’m not being original. i’m getting the exact same product, and it’s my choice. if i want to listen to ‘wonderful life’ i can go and buy an actual copy and it will cost me $10. if i don’t want to buy it i can listen to it from my desktop, or via my mobile phone, or via an online radio stream. i am getting the same product in each of these scenarios. if i want to use a legal copy of a song in a commercial setting i can buy it, or i can use it for free and have it at my fingertips. if i want to use a copy of a song on my phone i can use an online service such as last.fm. if i want to use a copy of a song for free online, and i like the song, i can listen to it via the website or i can stream it via online services. if i don’t like the song i can listen to it for free online. if i want to listen to a song for free i can go to a streaming website and stream it. i can’t guarantee that the stream isn’t infringing on someone else’s copyright, but i don’t have any way of verifying that either. the value of the content i am using is not so much in the product itself (the album), but in the experience of the music, and the benefit of the song. that’s what i’m paying for, and that’s what i’m getting, and that’s a value that’s better than a tangible product.
