armaedron is by far the most impressive environment i’ve ever seen recreated in a game. no doubt, the environment is a key element in the experience of the game. from my first hours in armaedron, i quickly realised that this is not merely a realistic terrain, but a fully-fleshed out, living, breathing world. the creatures react to the environment, the weather changes with the seasons, and there are no visible barriers to movement. it’s absolutely extraordinary. the vegetation, the clouds, the effects of the sun on the distant mountains all combine to create a breathtaking landscape.

armaedron continues to impress me. while the environment is the star of the show, this is a game that does have a lot to offer in terms of combat, player progression, and overall gameplay. the central island in particular is beautiful. i’ve walked the beaches, climbed around volcanos, observed the wildlife, and i’m really enjoying it. the game is extremely easy to pick up and, for the most part, very intuitive to play. the language barrier does present a challenge, but i have no doubt i’ll be learning it soon. for a sandbox game, this one is quite tightly-constructed.

i’ve done that in one long session, if you are a ‘noob’ and want to get a feel of it, and more than likely, you’ll probably end up doing it for hours on end.
once you’ve got the ‘feel’ of it all, have a look at the armaedron wiki, and you’ll find a wealth of information there. there are a number of guided campaigns, including the first in the series, “the hound of armaedron,” as well as a number of articles and tutorials, and of course, the armaedron wiki is full of lists of mods and other useful information.

crag, a volcano south of the central island, was especially impressive to me.

like i said, i’m a forum user. i think that’s what i’ve always been. that, and a writer. i’ve been writing a lot of forum posts in the last few months and i’ve enjoyed it. it’s a lot of fun to write in a forum. the problem with forums is that they are ephemeral. they are not a permanent record of a conversation. the words are cut and pasted, and they are lost. if i’ve learned anything in my life, it’s that if i want to be remembered for something i’ve done, i’ve got to write it down.
the story in call of duty is quite simple – win battles and you’ll move up the ranks. with arma 3, this isn’t the case. you do what you have to do, and you get to where you’re going. the story here is you’re trying to make it back to safety, and that can be tricky.
arma 3 is a weird mix of traditional, rigid and scripted missions and more freeform exploration. here, though, it’s clear that bohemia understands the value of the latter, and that it is something players enjoy. the first mission in the game requires you to sneak through the valley, stealthily and undetected, while a helicopter comes to take out your position. much of the game is about sneaking, and the mission runs to a predictable conclusion.
the game is very skill-based, which is a very arma thing. you can be encouraged to explore a mission, but if you do it wrong you’re punished. you’re given orders to take out a position, and if you take too long to do it you get in trouble. it’s a tried and tested formula and it works, but you have to do it right. the team has learned from its mistakes, and the arma 3 missions are incredibly variable, offering numerous different ways of going about a mission, depending on how you play it.
