A thing beyond forever by Nupur Chaudhuri is a gripping tale of courage and survival in a world torn apart by solar flares. That which lies beyond the walls of Eden is a harsh, unforgiving world. It is ruled by a law called the Doctrine, which states that only the righteous will survive.
Review: Whilst the concept of the novel is a great idea, the execution of the story is not quite as slick or strong as it could be. The prose is well written. The characters have depth, however, there is nothing very interesting to see or learn about them. It is not a complete boring bore. The only real problems are the narrator of the story. The voice that Noelle speaks in isn’t as strong or powerful as the others and it is a little bit disorienting. Overall, I’m not sure if I would recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read something exciting and exciting.
This is the first article in a long-term project to act as a mechanism for scholarly contact between philosophy and critical theory. It is a wide ranging exploration of the prospects for philosophy of the past. In particular, it studies the ways philosophers have anticipated their own deaths or that of the concept they work with. The arc of the argument is therefore chronological rather than thematic. It appears that in the early twentieth century, the terminus has already been reached. The philosophies they proposed have come and gone. Without a sense that their work has not been replaced by other equally effective and philosophically fruitful alternatives, philosophers have no obvious reason to think of their work as a worthwhile project. In this sense, the terminus has not been reached. This article argues, I think convincingly, that nothing has replaced philosophy of the past. In that sense, we are still living in the era of philosophy of the past. However, I also argue that to think of this as a terminal object, and remain concerned about the future of philosophy is to mistake its unrepresentability for a fruitful epistemological and philosophical project. I therefore suggest that philosophy of the past is a productive, if not essential, part of philosophy. Nonetheless, the critical theory movement ignores the fact that philosophy of the past has not yet reached a terminus, and draws the erroneous conclusion that it is not philosophical, and cannot be. It is to the credit of Slavoj Zizek that he understands the key role philosophy of the past has in regard to critical theory. He argues that philosophy of the past “is the main way of resisting the hegemony of the present. By doing so, it lets us sense the other-other: the other-other is not the great empty space outside the system that we are so familiar with. It is the system itself. The other-other is precisely what constitutes the system. To think of the other-other as the outside, as the void is ultimately to succumb to the paranoid logic of the system, to think of it as the void as the other-other is what constitutes resistance.”
