His family, a small, tight-knit cluster of Puerto Ricans, is the main obstacle keeping him from fulfilling his ultimate dream of becoming a best-selling NBA player, and on his journey to the top of his sport he often hurts the very people who need to stick with him the most. Whenever this happens Hock sticks to the mechanistic formula, deemphasizing the emotional and independent sides of Telfairs upbringing as he relates the subject matter with the other NBA players and coaches he interviews.
Of course, its not like the Nets are going to be rebuilding. The franchise has a long, proud history of challenging for titles, and Telfair isnt exactly coming out of the wilderness. He sat on the Blazers bench for two seasons, often feeling like a spare part even though that didnt stop him from putting up numbers in the Cascade Conference, averaging 16.6 points, 8.0 assists and 3.4 steals in 31.1 minutes per game last season.
Given his results with Portland and the Nets, who doubt that he will play a prominent role on a young squad next season, its reasonable to say he can contribute to a team other than one of the leagues bottom-feeders. An All-Star, maybe. Telfair admits hes no longer surprised that he caught the team projection bug early in his career, but he doesnt think he will go back to his old ways.
If only Telfair could be kept from getting hit in the mouth while simultaneously walking toward the basket. Then the world would know. And he probably wouldnt want it to be this way. But like the local fan knew all along, Sebastian Telfair is a superstar in his own backyard.
On the first day of filming for Through the Fire, Telfair is standing at the rim of his Lincoln High School gym with his head cocked to the side, presumably listening to the coaches. One coach, a former point guard at North Carolina named Bill Guthridge, whispers what will become a repeated theme in the film: If you cant do this, youll never get out. Its a sobering line, delivered in a measured tone. After moving to Louisville, Telfairs perceived worth is bigger than a Harlem shootarounds. Another coach, Louisvilles Rick Pitino, is almost dismissive of the chance a white male from an obscure city like New York could possibly succeed in the pro ranks. Pitino seems unconcerned about whether his team is justifiable with a white point guard. OK, maybe that isnt fair. Its also true that Telfair ha well-adjusted and mature for his age and might someday be a selfless teammate for any number of point guards. But there is something about the tenor of the whole conversation, repeated by two of the three coaches whose faces appear in the film, that doesnt exactly fit with the impression of them in the rest of the movie. But its a fairly open secret that these coaches didnt like each other.
