The Autohotel GPS unit has both navigation software and interface included in the box (4GB hard drive). The software is pretty light on detail, but as it is Windows based it has an interface which is easy to use. The software version bundled includes routes, so you have to pay a fee for online map data. The GPS unit itself appears to be a fully working unit as regards triangulation by satellites. It connects directly to the internet without the need for a data connection and can be used for triangulation of up to seven satellites. It also has a memory card slot and can be used for storing maps and routes and downloaded from Internet web sites.
It works correctly to a start. No problems with connecting to the GPS (no problems with the settings), it responds correctly to voice commands etc. However, it is the ugliest of all the units I have had to use, whether as a time and distance finder or as a device to link up with a PC for navigation software (Waze) it is not pretty. The screen display is so ugly, the buttons so small and the keys slightly lop-sided that I’m never going to be able to sell it.
The unit has all the hardware components (except the CPU) to be a decent GPS receiver. However, this unit is poor because of its software combination with the Nav unit. As stated the software is very simple, but it isn’t very good. As well, for connecting the unit to the web, you need to know the address of the machine and the preconfigured modem. The software also does not work at all in the mountains. It is not a good combination.
The unit’s application for maps is an Oracle4 Database file, “user.geo”. It has all the data, it is just that the software doesn’t allow you to query the database. It can only be brought up in Geocentric mode or Geo-referenced mode.
