Understanding layers
The most obvious difference between the two versions of Photoshop is the layer management system. The default setting in Photoshop CS6 allows you to put up to 99 layers in a single file. However, you can decrease this to 25 or fewer to create more manageable files. This feature makes Photoshop CS6 easier to use and organize for the novice.
You can either enable or disable the Active layer options on the Layers panel in the Layers palette. After enabling these options, you can see the Accent filter on an active layer on the Layers panel. The Compensate filter, which enables you to stack multiple layers and adjust the opacity of each layer, is shown on the Layers panel by default (refer to Figure 1-1).
Photoshop CS6 can perform basic digital image editing on your photographs, whether you are an experienced designer or a beginner. You’ll learn more about layers and how to make basic edits in the following sections.

Although Photoshop Elements is designed to compete against alternatives like GIMP and Paint.NET, there are more than 3,000 features that are only available in Elements.
In this tutorial, we will learn how to add text to images. You will learn how to add text anywhere on an image, how to change its size, opacity and color, and how to add effects to it, such as shadow, reflection, gradient, and blur.
You will also learn how to add a gradient background color and a drop shadow to your text. You will learn to create a watermark on images and add it in many different ways.
You will learn how to create a vignette effect, how to add borders and backgrounds, and how to make images rounder.
Let’s start.
Adding Text to Images
STEP 1
Let’s start by creating a new image with black background and add a photo.
Open the Photoshop Elements app and create a new photo, don’t worry about the size.
Next, click on the text tool.
Click on your image, hold Alt/Option on your keyboard and drag it over your photo.
Now you can see your text has been added over the photo.
STEP 2
If you want to have a text layer over the photo, you need to click on Layer > New > Layer.
STEP 3
Double-click on the image layer to open the Layers panel.
Now you can see you have three layers.
Drag the background layer down and arrange it.
You can also do this with keyboard shortcuts. Select an image layer, press G, and delete the background layer.
Now you can see you have the image and a layer above the image.
STEP 4
As we can see, the background layer is of the same color as the image background, while the text layer is color-managed.
Let’s color-manage it.
Click on the background layer to open the Layer Style panel.
Double-click on the Background layer.
Change the Blend Mode to Screen.
This way you can control the Screen Mode’s opacity and color.
Then set the Color to white and change the opacity to 80%.

According to a study by the nonprofit watchdog group, New Food Economy, those figures are only the tip of the iceberg. The report found that the industry to date has spent a total of $378.4 million on food advertising and PR. By contrast, the government says farmers’ marketing initiatives were worth a mere $8.5 million.
As the industry has come to dominate the news, the food budget has grown, and the industry’s efforts to obscure the industry’s role in the crisis have grown apace.
The Food & Water Watch report could hardly have been more pointed. “As food prices soar,” it said, “we are drowning in a sea of food advertising, which has become the hype-filled public relations campaign of choice for both food industry giants and small business operators.”
The report includes an extensive list of ways that the food industry has worked to obscure the impact of its own industrywide practices.
At the same time that the industry spent lavishly on food advertising and PR during the price boom, it also increased its lobbying efforts. The amount spent on lobbying increased dramatically—from $1.9 million in 2005 to $9 million in 2007, the final year for which the report could find figures.
The government’s figure on food promotion is based on the 2004 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), submitted to Congress by the Agriculture Department. That report says that the USDA spent more than $8.5 million on “outreach activities,” including Farmers’ Market Promotion and Information, Farm Bureau cooperative marketing, and the Farmers’ Market Promotion Program.
In response, the industry has begun insisting that it’s not really all that interested in marketing—at least not as that word is normally defined. In its defense, the report points to language from Food Marketing to Children and Families, the industry’s industrywide guide to setting nutrition standards. The guide, FMC says, is committed to working “to educate children and families on the health and nutritional benefits associated with a healthy diet.”
The report then notes that the FMC document, dated May 2006, claims that the Food Marketing division alone had “spent $20 million on nutrition education programs, projects, public-service announcements and other communications over the previous five years, yet it acknowledges that its “outreach efforts focus almost exclusively on disseminating marketing messages.”
